ORIGINAL VIDEO ANIMATION
I don't feel like it's necessary to give every single movie or OVA it's own page, so I'll be putting my thoughts on the OVAs here. So far, what I'll be covering here will be: 0080: War in the Pocket, 0083: Stardust Memories, 08th MS Team, Gundam Evolve, Igloo, Unicorn, The Origin, Thunderbolt, and Twilight Axis, along with any others to come. Any OVAs that go along with an AU series will be covered with that AU.
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM 0080: WAR IN THE POCKET
I knew a fair amount about this, I know it's about Zeon spies in a neutral colony and it focuses on a kid
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM 0080: WAR IN THE POCKET
i know not much about this one except some people think it's too sympathetic to zeon's fascist bits.
Episode 1: Gundamjack
- god this is fucking gorgeous
- strong setup, i like the idea of focusing on the zeon remnants that would presumably become axis
- that training mission rules
- i love the way gundam remembers how different life would be on earth than on the colonies
- i'm on board for gundam top gun. never seen top gun, but that's the vibe here
- wait, they've got nukes??
- gato is very conceited, with the whole "only a lieutenent" thing
- the vibes are so good
- kou is pretty observant!
- and these gundams aren't super well guarded, considering the federation clearly thinks it needs nuke capable mobile suits for somethign
- lmao at gato just walking in and taking the gundam
- the scale is really clear here, that's a BIG foot
- no longer using the lightsaber sounds?
- god this fight rules
Episode 2: Endless Pursuit
- kou immediately eats shit, huh?
- really enjoying the sense of place this military base has
- mora is absolutely flirting with nina
- interesting to see how much pride gato takes in his spacenoid heritage
- gato seems super committed to spacenoid independence, which is neat. him being such an ideologue makes him a compelling character, and him yelling at kou for not seeing the bigger picture is interesting
- i laughed at that exchange, with gato yelling "i'm your enemy!"
- south burning is good at his job, keeping kou and keith focused and in the game
- i love the insides of the cockpits here! i get why they moved to panoramic cockpits, but this looks so good
- so far i really like gato. he has concrete goals that are sympathetic and seems to have a plan. him getting pissed at kou for not having any goals is a good character beat
Episode 3: Into Battle, Albion
- if it's so important that it not be used, why'd you build it??
- they're really hyping gato up, he'd better keep living up to it
- oh i don't care for monsha
- monsha sucks and is singlehandedly making this show way worse
- i like the detail that either somehow the nfl is still around or allen was collecting vintage footblal merch. he clearly used to play, but that could mean college or something
- this plotline sucks. monsha's animated like he's from a different show
- this fight isn't even good
- it picks up when they're inside, but still. this episode wasn't good. why did they need a duel?
Episode 4: Attack and Retreat on the Burning Sand
- i think she should kill monsha
- she should kill this dipshit too. i hate them and they're the only real bad part of the show so far, but they're taking up so much screentime i think i hate the show too
- jesus fucking christ monsha
- someone please kill him
- oh thank god we're getting back to the plot
- i love gato's painting of himself
- i wanna know what operation stardust is. i bet it's just a colony drop
- all the actual plot is good so far, it's just that monsha and his buddies are the worst characters in the franchise so far
- why is monsha like this
- he's even racist
- every time we see zeon here it's good, they have plans and shit. and everytime we look at the federation we see monsha
- detail i like: the desertification we saw in zeta is giving the mobile suits a dry riverbed deep enough to use as cover
- i cannot overstate how much monsha sucks
Episode 5: Gundam, to the Sea of Stars
- kou's like if kamille were less good at shit and fucked up designing the zeta
- oh man cima's hot
- the internal politics of zeon are way more compelling than any scene with monsha could ever be
- incredibly funny that these guys are saluting fucking gihren zabi of all people while talking about the nobility of zeon
- oh it's a shower scene. and since this is an ova we now get to see tits. with nipple. not too egregious, i guess
- come on, man. you're dipping your calculations in her salad
- monsha deserves to have his dick shot off and then get jettisoned
- this drama sucks, can we go back to mora and nina being gay with each other?
- thank god cima's attacking
- i love delaz's speech here
- goddammit kou, take the floppy!
- yeah, why the fuck did the federation make it??? i can't think of anything other than they're a bunch of fascists
- cima immediately takes out everything that isn't a pegasus
- kou, maybe you should have taken the floppy and cima wouldn't have blown you up
- captain south burning is incredibly cool, i'll give the show that much
- nina's va relies too much on crying out like that, it gets old
- the way they catch the broken gundam is super cool, i loved the leg flying off
- "one last time!" hmm. i think zeon keeps declaring war until at least unicorn, and maybe even after that
- the show's back on track, this was a mostly pretty good episode even if it was frustrating
Episode 6: The Warrior of Von Braun
- sending monsha the lowtiergod meme with my mind
- nina should spend time with her friends and have yuri moments instead of dealing with kou
- this is all very different in tone to the first 2 episodes
- like, there's a noticeable difference between keith's flirting in episode 1 and the shit going on in this bar
- this whole thing with kou just isn't compelling. i'm kind of glad he gets the shit kicked out of him by these guys
- i assume nina's bad past relationship is gonna come up again?
- cima meeting up with anaheim is deeply unsurprising
- this guy that picked up kou is an asshole
- kelley was a zeon pilot? i guess that's interesting
- i love delaz's speeches. is he right? maybe or maybe not, but the federation sure isn't interested in proving him wrong
- interesting dilemma for kou here. nice of him to help out, but kind of incredibly dumb as well.
- hell yeah the opening playing over him launching is so fucking cool
Episode 7: With Shining Blue Fire
- all the testing of the gundam is really good
- good for mora! and keith i guess
- cima continues to girlboss her way around anaheim
- so nina's being transferred away because cima doesn't want anaheim supporting the federation so much, but what's the reason given officially?
- was gato being sincere? i think probably, since this was all cima's dudes and gato hates cima
- ok i kind of like him being so nervous here, i think that works. obviously he should just ask her out, but it works
- i respect cima so much
- the electricity thing is a bit much
- how does nina know kelley?
- rip kelley
- that was a pretty good fight
- kou's really bad at this whole 'asking a girl out' thing, but oh well
- so gato was being sincere!
Episode 8: Conspiracy Sector
- new op rules
- the training bits are better than the actual fights
- oh burning is gonna die
- earthnoids realizing how big the colonies they're dealing with are is good
- ignoring a bunch of stuff that happened in tha past, the kou and nina handshake after kou gets the kill is real good
- monsha sucks so bad, he's probably the worst thing in the entire franchise up to this point
- burning talking about kou and how he's gonna take over, burning is so dead
- and he's talking about his wife????
- mora should be able to kill without oversight
- if nothing else, i love seeing these mobile suits move, the verniers look so good
- oh burning found the secret of operation stardust, no one has ever been more doomed
- lmao he even starts to read it before his mobile suit just fucking explodes
- that was fucking hysterical, the show couldn't have picked a funnier way of doing that if it tried
Episode 9: The Nightmare of Solomon
- oh hey, it's axis! is haman karn in power yet?
- oh there she is!
- i will never get tired of little things gundam decides about how people react to being in space. seeing the earth for the first time in years, or possibly ever, is a good beat
- i mean, obviously they're committed, zeon's remnants have been here for 3 years you can't last much longer without a base they just don't have at this time
- god seeing the zaku monoeye move around is so cool
- gato's hair back style looks way worse
- like seeing him here, i think he's a compelling antagonist
- the albion crew are getting fucked up
- nina is such a sterotype, and kou's such an asshole
- monsha still sucks but at least i think i'm on the same wavelength as the show about him torturing that prisoner
- i assume monsha joins the titans and gets killed by kamille in episode 7 or whatever, he seems like the type
- and the prisoner is resolute because he has an actual goal and vision for the future
- hearing music that sounds like the zeta music over the federation fleet is also good
- they're acting like they're still at war with zeon but won't acknowledge that's what they're doing
- i love all the bits where we see people working to make the mobile suits move
- this speech is extremely good out of touch federation stuff
- god the fact that everyone is so worried about the nuke. you did this!!!!! that was you!!!!!!
- fighting is all very cool
- was the episode count known? like, would anyone have gone out and bought this tape and thought the show might be ending soon? i guess they'd have to not think about the opening
- kou has still not thought about the big picture whatsoever. i assume he never will
- SOLOMON! I HAVE RETURNED!!!
- he was right to do that, knowing where the federation came from and will go
Episode 10: Colliding Warzones
- maybe i'd be less on board with the nuke if i hadn't just watched 9 episodes of the federation crew being as obnoxious as it's possible to make anime characters
- seeing all the fiddly bits on the gundam move post nuke is really good
- this show remains gorgeous
- kou desperately trying to get gato to acknowledge him while still having developed no real opinions on anything
- this federation guy going "we've lost 2/3rds of our fleet in a single strike? that means we've won!" is really something
- this fight is super good
- oh god nina's going to 'have to choose' between kou and gato, isn't she
- i love it when two people destroy each other in a mutual killing blow, and i also love it when a warrior earns another's respect
- i'm trying to stay positive, but jesus everything with nina sucks
- i like mora a lot, i wish she was in a better show
- nina is poorly written and it makes me sad
- i assume cima is dropping these colonies
- cool, another gundam
- dang, that's pretty a cool atrocity
Episode 11: La Vie En Rose
- i don't know who these people are
- obviously this isn't going to work, since they brought up the question of why cima didn't just light up the colonies
- i guess gato's planning on dying to make stardust work
- that's a cool mobile armor
- i love all these scenes where we see the scifi workings
- i kind of hate these characters
- sunglasses guys has bad vibes
- there are bits of this show that are interesting politically but i think they're unintentional
- people keep talking up kou and he's the first gundam protagonist where i just do not see it
- kou really can't keep getting away with this
- god cima is delightful. i love her
- this plan is actually really smart, i like the villains in this show way more than the heroes
- why is it that warning shots usually hit the ground?
- i can't believe this show is trying to paint monsha as heroic here
- yeah obviously she was dating gato. this sucks
- god damn that's a big gundam. guess it's gotta fight gato's massive mobile armor
Episode 12: Assault on the Point of No Return
- if nothing else at least this show gave us men of destiny
- i like how it's this massive hulking figure but it still just uses the normal gundam beam rifle
- isn't the i-field what amuro had in cca? how's that work with the timeline?
- very little has happened, but it all looks very nice
- i do like seeing the refeuling and reloading going on
- this show likes to act as if it's super hard scifi real robot (and i do like to see all the little touches they do there!) but every character other than kou and gato is consistently pretty much useless on the battlefield
- i feel bad for nina, having such shitty writers
- oh shit it's jamitov hymen!
- oh my god is hymen behind all this? that kind of sucks and is pretty boring
- cima rules! girlboss
- when i thought monsha was gonna get taken out i almost cheered
- how does kou know that? he should have just started blasting it
- you know what? under no circumstances do you have to hand it to jamitov hymen and bask om. but that was a pretty good plan on their part
- respect to delaz, he has goals and he wants them accomplished even if he can't live to see it
Episode 13: A Storm Raging Through
- mr captain of the albion asks "is this a military dictatorship?" without any real awareness of the answer
- i like them working with cima, that's cool
- cima's mobile suit rules
- the colony getting singed by the solar system looks real good
- oh god what's nina doing?
- rip cima, that was a pretty sick way to go
- oh good, more nina drama
- i don't care!!! this is the worst drama in gundam since rosamia
- god damn, gato and kou survived that?
- rip gato. christ
- oh, kou got arrested for that? lmao
- lmao at the whole albion crew going "wow! cool uniforms!" at the fact that they've all just joined a fascist group
- and that ending sucks. i don't want kou or nina to be happy together, they both suck!
IN CONCLUSION
this wasn't well written! confused by some of the takes i've seen on gato. he's dropping a wmd on a military base, how come everyone goes "he's so evil!" over that. if anything's a legitimate target it's fucking jaburo
very pretty, men of destiny slaps, the bit at the end where the whole crew goes "wow! cool uniforms!" made me laugh
