My personal favorite anime of all time, maybe my favorite piece of art of all time. utena isn't for everyone, but it's basically perfect imo. it takes those budgetary restraints and still manages to make each duel unique, with all sorts of background details and animation shortcuts that add thematic weight to the characters' arcs. the surreal animation and setting make the mythic arcs of the characters really hit for me
